It’s a common misconception that you can place vape vending machines anywhere—as long as they have age verification. This is false.
While age verification technology is a smart way to deter youth access, very few states actually recognize it in their laws. And more importantly, even in those that do, most still restrict where vape vending machines can be placed, regardless of the tech inside.
What Does Age Verification Really Do?
There are two main types used today: (Comprehensive Age Verification Solutions)
-
ID Scanning
Machines scan the barcode on the back of a government-issued ID to confirm age. It’s fast and helpful, but not foolproof—fake or borrowed IDs can still slip through. Purchase ID Scanner here. -
Facial Recognition via Third-Party APIs (like APT Verify)
This adds a layer of biometric verification. The system matches the ID photo with a live image to confirm the buyer’s identity and age. It’s stronger—but also more expensive and dependent on local privacy laws.
What the Law Says
Technology doesn’t override law.
Even if your machine verifies age perfectly, state and local laws still govern whether vending machines can be used to sell vape products—and where they can be placed.
Most states either:
- Prohibit vape vending machines entirely
- Allow them only in adult-only venues (like bars, clubs, or tobacco shops)
- Require licensing and approval, regardless of tech
Bottom Line
Age verification is necessary, but it’s not a free pass.
Before you place a machine:
- Check your state and city laws
- Don’t assume tech equals compliance
- Stick to 21+ venues unless your jurisdiction explicitly allows otherwise
